After making spoons for a while, I suddenly wanted to create something more practical and useful for myself. Since I spend a lot of time at my desk and love fountain pens, I decided to make a pen holder that I could place on my desk! While searching for design ideas, I came across a long-bodied dachshund-shaped pen holder and thought it would be fun to make something similar.
The first challenge was finding a thick piece of wood. Fortunately, my wood carving teacher provided me with a good walnut block. However, I had to be careful as there was a knot in the wood around the dog’s belly area. Although it’s not visible in the photos, the knot made it difficult to work evenly on the belly, which is a bit disappointing.

As I worked on this project, I felt so happy seeing the dog’s cute shape gradually emerge. I paid special attention to the face, and I’m really satisfied with how the adorable, pointy nose turned out.

Ta-da! Here’s how it looks with a fountain pen inserted. To increase compatibility, I made the pen holder’s hole larger. I was careful to sand the inside of the hole meticulously to prevent any scratches on the pens. It was challenging to ensure the holder was level and stable, but now that it’s finished, I feel so proud and know I’ll be using it for a long time.
